What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is an exercise method aimed to create a broad, general, and inclusive fitness. It was designed to best prepare trainees for any physical contingency, whether it be sport, activities of daily living, or to simply improve your ability to tackle any given task. CrossFit has become the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies, firefighters, military personnel, and even professional athletes. Looking at all physical tasks collectively, CrossFit develops physical skills and adaptations that universally lead to performance advantages across a broad spectrum of physical activity. In sum, CrossFit prides itself on "forging" a well-rounded, diverse individual.

Prescription

CrossFit promotes and encourages the maintenance of healthy active lifestyles. Those lifestyles are dependent upon our ability to do the simplest of everyday tasks such as getting out of a chair, walking your dog, and taking out the trash. CrossFit can be defined as: "constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement." Functional movements are the core of CrossFit training. They are multi-joint movements that mimic those used everyday including running, squatting, jumping, pushing, pulling, etc...  They are natural, effective, and efficient exercises used to propel ones body or object in a given direction. Functional movements allow for an individual to efficiently move large loads over long distances.

Along with functional movements, "high intensity" is a staple to the CrossFit program. Intensity is the independent variable most commonly associated with maximizing return on positive adaptation. Intensity determines results. Increasing intensity allows an individual to surpass previous thresholds to elicit the positive responses we want such as improved body composition, increased aerobic capacity, increased strength, or even increased flexibility and coordination. Our goal is to increase intensity by simply decreasing the amount of time it takes us to complete our tasks.
